Angelina Jolie recently announced that she had a double mastectomy - a trend that is becoming more and more common among women.
The procedure involves the removal of both breasts in order to prevent breast cancer.
Doctors are curious why the surgery has gained so much popularity. It does not necessarily prevent breast cancer from growing and spreading and there are alternatives to the surgery such as medicine. The surgery is also not a guarantee that the cancer will be removed.
The permanent and irreversible surgery is an important one and one that takes about a month to recover from.
